Mother Teresa, born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, now the capital of North Macedonia, was a Catholic nun and missionary renowned for her selfless service to the poor and the destitute. She felt a calling to religious life from an early age and left home at 18 to join the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland.
After training in Dublin and Darjeeling, she arrived in India in 1929, where she taught at a convent school in Calcutta (now Kolkata). While serving as a teacher, she was deeply moved by the poverty and suffering she witnessed in the streets of the city.
In 1946, Mother Teresa experienced what she described as a "call within a call" from God, urging her to leave the convent and work directly with the poorest of the poor. She received permission from the Vatican and started her own order, the Missionaries of Charity, in 1950. The primary mission of the Missionaries of Charity was to care for "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone."
Mother Teresa and her sisters began their work by ministering to the sick and dying in the streets of Calcutta, offering basic medical care, food, and compassion to those in need. Over time, her organization grew, establishing hospices, orphanages, schools, and centers for the disabled around the world.
Her tireless dedication to serving the poorest of the poor earned her international acclaim and numerous awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Despite her fame, Mother Teresa remained humble and focused on her mission of love and service.
Mother Teresa passed away on September 5, 1997, but her legacy of compassion and humanitarianism continues to inspire people worldwide. In 2016, she was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church, recognizing her exemplary life of service and devotion to the marginalized and suffering.
