Harriet Tubman, born Araminta Ross around 1820 in Dorchester County, Maryland, was an African American abolitionist, humanitarian, and Union spy during the American Civil War. She is best known for her role as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, a network of safe houses and routes that helped enslaved people escape to freedom in the North.

Tubman was born into slavery, enduring harsh treatment and violence from a young age. In 1849, she escaped from slavery, making her way to Philadelphia and eventually settling in Auburn, New York. Despite her own freedom, Tubman risked her life multiple times to return to the South and guide others to freedom through the Underground Railroad.

Known as "Moses" by those she helped liberate, Tubman made approximately 13 missions to rescue over 70 enslaved individuals, earning her the nickname "the conductor of the Underground Railroad." Her remarkable courage, ingenuity, and determination made her a legendary figure in the abolitionist movement.

During the Civil War, Tubman served as a nurse, cook, and spy for the Union Army. She provided valuable intelligence on Confederate positions and activities, leading raids and scouting missions in South Carolina. Her contributions to the Union effort helped undermine the institution of slavery and hasten the end of the war.

After the Civil War, Tubman continued her activism, advocating for women's suffrage and the rights of African Americans. She also established the Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged in Auburn, providing care and support for elderly African Americans in need.

Tubman's legacy as a fearless freedom fighter and humanitarian endures to this day. She is celebrated as an icon of courage, resilience, and determination in the face of oppression, and her life serves as an inspiration to generations of activists fighting for justice and equality. Harriet Tubman passed away on March 10, 1913, but her legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
